Abstract: According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a teratogenic, mutagenic and immunotoxin toxin is classified in group 1 carcinogens. As a foodstuff’s contaminant, Aflatoxin B1 poses a threat to public health and food safety. This study aimed to determine aflatoxin B1 concentration in Food Product of Animal Origin (FPAO) marketed in Yaoundé city. A total of 72 samples (fresh beef and chicken, roasted chicken, fresh fish, dried fish and shrimp) were collected in 2019 and distributed in 12 types of FPAO. The samples were taken from different markets in Mokolo, Melen and Oyom-Abang areas of Yaoundé city and stored at 4˚C. These samples were subjected to competitive ELISA technique. Our results revealed that 100% of the samples were contaminated with AFB1. The highest AFB1 content was founded in roasted chicken (2.135 ± 0.002ng/ml). This rate is roughly equal to the maximum limit of 2ppb set by the FAO. Findings obtained during this study indicates an urgent need for the implementation of regular quality control measures for foods marketed in Cameroon. Considerable actions are needed in addition to government efforts in implementing strong food quality control system for global health concern.
