Abstract: Omeprazole is a medicine used in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease with an estimated prevalence of 10% of the adult population worldwide. In Africa, the data are fragmentary and vary depending on the series. In Senegal, it is estimated at 12.4% in 2011. Its treatment involves the use of antiulcer drugs. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the quality of omeprazole-based medicines. The study focused on 20 samples of omeprazole-based medicines collected from private pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and health centers in the city of Dakar. Physical and visual inspection, pharmacotechnical tests and dosage of the active ingredient were carried out. The results showed that the samples complied with the mass uniformity test and 85% had a compliant water content, 15 of the 20 samples collected had an active ingredient content compliant with the standard, i.e. 75% .Thus, the majority of samples tested were found to comply with the tests. However, the study was carried out on a limited number of samples and given the global context of drug quality, more detailed monitoring by the national medecines regulatory authority is recommended.
